How To Get Rid Of Cockroaches
Cockroaches were a thriving species when dinosaurs were alive – some 300 million years ago – so if you think you can eradicate them from your home with a bit of insect spray alone, you might have to think again. Cockroaches, like diamonds, are forever.
It’s said these pesky insect pests would be the only living thing left after a nuclear holocaust, but that’s a myth that’s been busted. However, cockroaches do become immune to sprays and insect repellents, so they are a challenge to control. But don’t despair, you can manage these pests with the help of a reputable pest manager like Acacia Pest Control. You should also keep your home unfriendly to cockroaches. But first, some info you need to know about cockroaches:
Australia’s Roach Pests
There are about 4,000 species of cockroaches worldwide, and 450 of those live in Australia. Luckily, not all of them are pests that creep and crawl and spread diseases in our homes and buildings – but those that do are bad enough. The cockroaches that infest homes and cause squeals of disgust if sighted are the German (little light brown ones), the American cockroach (big and reddish-brown) and the Australian cockroach (big and brown with a yellow streak near the wings).
Acacia Pest Control’s customers can feel secure in the knowledge that they are getting the best service available.

Why Does Your Home Attract Cockroaches?
If cockroaches are attracted to your home you can make it unattractive by doing a few things such as knowing why they’re feeling comfortable about staying, and where they’re nesting. Understanding why cockroaches are infesting your home is a must if you want to keep the populations down and keep your family healthy. Control methods such as not leaving easily accessible sources of food around that attracts cockroaches, and this means both the food you eat as well as pet food, soap and glue, strangely. So to discourage cockroaches, don’t leave food scraps, dirty plates and cooking utensils, or leftover pet food for them to eat. Regularly clean underneath kitchen, bathroom, and laundry appliances and leave pet food bowls empty and clean overnight. Take any recycling or other garbage to the bin every night and make sure the lid is closed so roaming cockroaches don’t crawl in overnight. Cockroaches thrive in humid, warm environments, so they like kitchens and bathrooms. Always check around sinks and drains for leakages. One great way to make sure your home is free of cockroaches and other pests is by calling Acacia Pest Control and having regular inspections and a cockroach extermination, removal and control service.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches
If you have an infestation of cockroaches of any of the pest species, it’s a good idea to have an inspection by a professional company such as Acacia Pest Control because, as they say, if you see one cockroach you can be sure there are hundreds more hidden in the walls or crevices. Once the cockroaches have been exterminated, you still need to keep your house unattractive to them because your neighbours could have a population that can spread back to your home. You can do it yourself using a surface spray to hit any cockroaches you see, and create a temporary barrier with a surface spray if you know where they come in. There are also cockroach repellents you can use at all the cockroach entry points, but for a proper solution, the professionals do it best.

Other DIY Cockroach Solutions
You can buy over-the-counter solutions for your cockroach problem, including the following:
- Cockroach traps and baits
Cockroach baits and traps can be useful if used in conjunction with keeping a clean house and making it unattractive to the pest as mentioned above. The baits and traps are meant to work for three months, attracting the cockroaches and killing them and their eggs after they eat the bait.
- Cockroach bombs
If you can’t find where the cockroaches are hiding, bombs can be useful as both a preventative treatment if you’re moving into a new home or to blast your existing space. Cockroach bombs take some time and organisation, and you must read the instructions carefully. You must take all your pets (including fish) and your family out of the house for about two hours while the bombs work, then open all doors and windows to ventilate the rooms for half an hour before you go back. Cockroach bombs leave a chemical residue for up to three months, so be careful about using them around anyone sensitive to fragrances and chemicals. And cover the kids’ toys or remove them before you bomb. Another significant downside when using “Cockroach Bombs” is the non-selective areas treated.
These are:
- Cutlery, plates and bowls, pots and pans, cutting boards and work surfaces in the kitchen.
- Pillows, blankets, sheets and doonas in the bedrooms
- Toothbrush, hair brushes, towels and face washers in the bathroom.
- Work surfaces of desks and keyboards, seats and cushions in the homework / living areas.
Again, to save you all the hassle, call in the professionals who will take care of the pest problem for you with no fuss. They don’t treat non target areas, they do selectively treat to control pests effectively whilst minimising people’s unnecessary exposures.
